The Rook Lamp
There are a lot of happy accidents in our design process. Something gets mis-made or misinterpreted and the mistake is actually better than what was intended. We try to look for those moments and let them happen. The wood form of Rook was originally designed as heavy foot for a taller floor lamp. But when the “stalk” of the prototype was still being made, someone stored the shade directly on the chunky, walnut base. We essentially shouted “done!” and changed directions, introducing Rook as a table lamp. And while Rook was designed to sit with all three legs resting on the table, someone discovered that you could stand it up on one leg, in a kind of kicking pose. Again, it was a happy accident.
Designing stuff we love.
Every day here in Minneapolis.
